Swedish-Style Meatballs
DinnerStovetop40 minServes 4
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/4 onion, grated
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup cream
Amounts are scaled from the original 4 servings; cooking times may change for bigger batches.
Steps
- Mix beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, salt and pepper; roll into 1-inch balls.
- Brown in butter over medium heat, turning, 8 minutes; remove.
- Whisk flour into the pan fat for 1 minute, then whisk in broth and simmer until thick.
- Stir in cream, return meatballs and simmer 8-10 minutes until they reach 160°F.
Swaps
- Half-and-half or whole milk can replace cream; the sauce will be a little thinner, so simmer it a bit longer and do not boil hard.
- Out of breadcrumbs? Crush crackers or toast and pulse stale bread, or use rolled oats.
- Water plus a bouillon cube or a spoon of soy sauce can replace broth.
Times are a guide; ovens and air fryers vary. Cook poultry to 165°F, ground meat to 160°F, and pork and fish to 145°F. Diet tags come from the ingredient list; check labels for allergens.
